Part 3: Selection of Process and Materials – Design for Manufacturing by Scott Miller

by | Dec 13, 2019

Scott Miller lays out strategies for selection of materials and manufacturing processes during the development phase of an IoT initiative. Starting with ways to reduce complexity by reducing part count and Assembly Index, the presentation jumps right into process and material selection tips and strategies. Selection of P&M early in the design is critical. It is important to consider all options, while keeping in mind CM's capabilities and applying common sense. Part assembly and materials are closely linked to process. Reduce the number of secondary ops as much as possible. Design decisions will cast a long shadow - it is expensive in time and money to switch later. Scott then goes into some common M&P considerations including Production Volume, tooling budget, schedule, part geometries, aesthetics and accuracy. The presentation wraps up with a high level look at some common manufacturing processes and methods of process comparison.
